New research from Tommy’s Graded Model of Miscarriage Care

29th April 2026

We welcome today’s release of new research from Tommy’s on its Graded Model of Miscarriage Care, which highlights opportunities to improve care and reduce the number of miscarriages.

The model outlines an approach to miscarriage care that focuses on assessing individual risk and offering support based on need. It contributes to wider discussions about how care can be delivered more consistently and effectively for those affected by pregnancy loss. Tommy’s estimate that, if introduced nationwide, this approach could help prevent over 10,000 miscarriages each year.

The Graded Model of Miscarriage Care proposes a more structured approach to support following miscarriage, including:

  • After a first loss: information on possible risk factors, emotional support and signposting, and guidance on options such as progesterone in future pregnancies where appropriate
  • After a second loss: additional investigations such as blood tests, referrals where needed, and access to reassurance scans in future pregnancies
  • After a third loss: further investigations, including genetic testing, more detailed blood tests, and assessment in a specialist clinic

Currently, access to investigations and specialist support often depends on experiencing multiple miscarriages. This remains a significant concern for many people, and one that continues to be raised by those who contact our services.

Our own Miscarriage in the UK: A State of the Nation report similarly highlights variation in access to care and support, as well as the importance of earlier and more consistent approaches. Together, these findings add to the growing understanding of how miscarriage care could be improved across the UK.

Vicki Robinson, Miscarriage Association Chief Executive, said:

“Research like this is a really important step forward in improving miscarriage care, and we strongly support the move towards a model that offers help after every loss, because every loss matters. For too long, women have effectively been asked to endure repeated heartbreak before they can access investigations or support, and there is no justification for having to experience three losses before care begins. As this study shows, earlier intervention has the potential not only to prevent future miscarriages, but to identify underlying issues much sooner.

“It also reflects what we hear from our own community. Our research found that 65% of women did not receive adequate follow-up care after miscarriage, and many are left to cope with the physical and emotional impact alone. The consequences of that can be significant, with many experiencing ongoing mental health difficulties as a result.

“No one should be left without support after pregnancy loss. We need a system that provides compassionate, consistent care from the first miscarriage onwards – including clear information, proactive follow-up, and access to both physical and emotional support – so that no one is left to navigate this alone.”
