Recognition for loss: Baby Loss Certificates coming to Wales

We are pleased to share that the Welsh Government has announced its commitment to introduce a baby loss certificate scheme for losses before 24 weeks of pregnancy.

The news follows the rollout of baby loss certificates in England in February 2024, which has seen more than 100,000 certificates issued. Claire Hughes, MP for Bangor Aberconwy, called for the scheme to be made available in Wales. She said she is “really pleased” that this decision has now been taken, adding on X (formerly Twitter):

“Nothing will ever take away the pain of losing a pregnancy. But I hope this small step will provide some comfort to bereaved families.”

The certificates will offer formal recognition of a baby’s life and loss, something many bereaved parents have found deeply meaningful. While details of how and when the scheme will be rolled out in Wales are yet to be confirmed, we welcome this important step in recognising the experiences of those affected by pregnancy loss.

We will share further updates once more information becomes available. You can also read about the scheme already available in England here.
