Miscarriage Association meets with Government to discuss bereavement leave for pregnancy loss
9th June 2025

Earlier today (9 June), Miscarriage Association Chief Executive Vicki Robinson visited the Department for Business and Trade to meet with Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Justin Madders MP. The meeting was an important step in continuing discussions around the Government’s commitment to introducing bereavement leave for those affected by pregnancy loss before 24 weeks.
The Government has previously stated its support for the principle of bereavement leave in cases of pregnancy loss, with Justin Madders MP confirming this in Parliament on 11 March 2025. Today’s meeting offered a welcome opportunity to hear directly from the Minister, share the case for change, and agree clear next steps.
Vicki was joined by Anna Malnutt, one of our lived experience volunteers, and trustee Jane Harris. Together, they outlined the need for change by sharing statistical evidence as well as Anna’s personal experience of loss, highlighting the real impact a lack of formal leave can have.
Vicki Robinson, CEO of the Miscarriage Association, said:
“Today has been another positive step forward in ensuring that, for the first time, those experiencing pre-24-week pregnancy loss will be officially recognised in bereavement leave legislation. It’s also long-overdue validation that this kind of loss can be experienced as a bereavement like any other.”
“We welcome the Minister’s commitment to engaging with us and listening to the voices of our community.
“As the Bill continues its journey through Parliament, we’ll keep working with the Government to ensure the new legislation brings meaningful support to those who need it.”
The Miscarriage Association remains committed to campaigning for Leave for Every Loss and ensuring that support and recognition are extended to everyone affected by pregnancy loss.
